Abstract
This talk synthesizes and extends various decolonization efforts throughout and beyond academia, including the decolonization of knowledge and knowledge production. It will explain the concept of coloniality of knowledge and how it functions as a central tool both of colonial rule and of contemporary Western hegemony within an unequal global economy and interstate system. It will give examples for eurocentric concepts in a range of disciplines and explore how these function. It will discuss inequalities in global academia and knowledge production (also termed intellectual imperialism and academic dependency), and show how these function to maintain and reinscribe coloniality of knowledge. Lastly, it will discuss various approaches to decolonization of knowledge and knowledge production.
